Scarlett Johansson , who once described monogamy as unnatural for human beings, has married actor Ryan Reynolds in a quiet wedding ceremony in Canada.
The actress tied the knot on Saturday at a remote resort outside Vancouver, British Columbia, her representative confirmed.
Johansson, who had dated actors Josh Hartnett and Jared Leto, is convinced her relationship with her new husband will last because they are among those couples who can be monogamous.
Just married: Scarlett Johansson, pictured on a recent trip to Malibu, tied the knot with actor Ryan Reynolds in Canada on Saturday
'I believe in finding a soul mate,' she once said in an interview with Cosmopolitan. 'I've always been in monogamous relationships. I would never want to be in an open one. It'd be too awful.'Wedding guests included the 23-year-old bride's mother, Melanie Sloan, and her brother, Adrian Johansson.
The Lost in Translation actress - described by Woody Allen as 'sexually overwhelming' and Esquire magazine as 'the sexiest woman alive' - and 31-year-old, Canadian-born Reynolds began dating in the spring of last year shortly after Reynolds split from then fiancee, the singer Alanis Morissette.
They announced their engagement on May 5, the day the actress flashed a three-carat diamond ring estimated to be worth about £16,500 at the Met Costume Gala Ball in New York.
They informed their friends of the engagement by sending them text messages.
Loved up: The pair got married after announcing their engagement in May
Morissette recently expressed well wishes on her ex's engagement and said she was not bitter about her ex-fiance's romance with Johansson, insisting the couple were meant to be together 'spiritually'.The Canadian singer, who was with Reynolds for four years, said: 'On a certain spiritual level, I feel like everyone's where they need to be.'
This is the first marriage for both Johansson and Reynolds.
It may not be long before the pair start a family as Reynolds has already revealed he wants children with Johansson.
He said at the time of their engagement: 'I do want a child at some point. I feel like I need to fulfil the genetic paradigm, the destiny of it all.'
At the beginning of September, Miss Johansson said she was determined to keep her wedding to Reynolds 'as private as possible.'
Referring to other lavish Hollywood wedding bashes, she said that they 'sound awful'.
Rock on: Scarlett's three-carat diamond ring was said to be worth about £16,500
She added: 'Actually, I'm a private person, so, obviously, I'm pretty sure our wedding will be as private as possible.'While promoting her latest movie, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, directed by Woody Allen, Johansson said that she was excited about her upcoming wedding because she was eager to become an honorary Canadian - and hopefully pass through the border from the US quicker in the future.
The wedding took many by surprise as it had been reported she planned to delay the ceremony until after the upcoming United States presidential election, which takes place at the beginning of November.
But Johansson is no stranger to doing things her way. In 2006 she caused a furore when she told Allure magazine that she had HIV tests every six months.
'I get tested for HIV twice a year,' she declared. 'One has to be socially aware. It's part of being a decent human to be tested for STDs. It's just disgusting behaviour when people don't. It's so irresponsible.'
Soul mates: Although she once described monogamy as unnatural for human beings, Scarlett says she would never want to be in an open relationship
She added: 'Contrary to popular belief, I'm not promiscuous. There does seem to be a mistaken belief out there that I am sexually available somehow — which is not to say that I'm not open-minded about sex.'In another interview, she said falling in love had a lot to do with timing.
'You don't always meet the right person at the right time,' she told Cosmopolitan.
The actress claimed remaining faithful to one partner is 'hard work' and not natural.
She said: 'I don't think it's a natural instinct for human beings. Monogamy can be hard work for some people. I don't think it applies to everybody and I don't think a lot of people can do it.'
But Johansson insisted she is among those who can resist the temptation to cheat.
